the title of this collection speaks to art’s capacity to connect with us on a gut level. several weeks ago i was listening to a song and it struck me that even though i know virtually nothing about the artist’s experience or the lyrics themselves, the music was still able to make me feel so deeply — to bring me to tears and create an aching in my chest. in these instances, it’s easy to believe that the artist is speaking directly to us, as if their pain/joy/longing/nostalgia is our own.
i know i’m not alone in this feeling. whether it’s a song, a poem, a meal, a painting, a film, or an everyday moment — art has the power to resonate in an indescribable way. rick rubin says: “artists allow us to see what we are unable to see, but somehow already know. it may be a view of the world singularly different from our own. or one so close, it seems miraculous, as if the artist is looking through our own eyes. in either case, the artist’s perception reminds us of who we are and who we can be.” creating and partaking in art is so deeply human and personal — it connects us and gives us a way to view and experience the world, even when the world feels bigger, messier, more beautiful or more painful than language allows.
this collection is comprised of (and for) those indescribable feelings, and my hope is that some small detail may resonate with you as well. i can’t wait to hear what you think. xx
